Analytic theory for the tangential YORP produced by the asteroid regolith

چکیده

Context. The tangential YORP effect is a radiation pressure torque produced by asymmetric thermal emission structures on the asteroid surface. Previous works considered these to be boulders of different shapes lying surface asteroid. Aims. We study rough interface asteroid's regolith. Methods. created an approximate analytic theory heat conduction slightly non-flat sinusoidal analyzed published data small-scale shape (162173) Ryugu and estimated its due roughness. Results. derive formula that expresses in terms geometric properties. highest at parameter order unity for irregularities wavelength. Application this equation predicts 5-70 times greater than normal effect. Conclusions. contribution regolith roughness can comparable boulders. same describe boulders, thus adding new term previously

Analytic Theory of the Yorp Effect for Near-spherical Objects

The YORP effect is produced when the surface of a small object in interplanetary space is heated by sunlight and reradiates the absorbed energy in thermal wavelengths. The absorbed, reflected, and emitted photons produce tiny torques on the small body that can change its spin rate and obliquity over planetary timescales. Previous theories of the YORP effect relied on numerical or seminumerical ...

Yarkovsky/YORP chronology of asteroid families

Asteroid families are the byproducts of catastrophic collisions whose fragments form clusters in proper semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination space. Although many families have been observed in the main asteroid belt, only two very young families, Karin and Veritas, have well-determined ages. The ages of other families are needed, however, if we hope to infer information about their eje...

THE YARKOVSKY AND YORP EFFECTS: Implications for Asteroid Dynamics

The Yarkovsky and YORP (Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack) effects are thermal radiation forces and torques that cause small objects to undergo semimajor axis drift and spin vector modifications, respectively, as a function of their spin, orbit, and material properties. These mechanisms help to (a) deliver asteroids (and meteoroids) with diameter D < 40 km from their source locations in the...

Regolith migration and sorting on asteroid Itokawa.

High-resolution images of the surface of asteroid Itokawa from the Hayabusa mission reveal it to be covered with unconsolidated millimeter-sized and larger gravels. Locations and morphologic characteristics of this gravel indicate that Itokawa has experienced considerable vibrations, which have triggered global-scale granular processes in its dry, vacuum, microgravity environment. These process...
